Quite a bit can be learned about Norm "Apache Red" Coons by reading
"Apache Sunrise" by Jerome M. Boyle. Jerry was Apache 24, a member of the
Weapons Platoon of Troop A, 1st Squadron, 9th Cavalry. His book includes a
photograph of Norm Coons next to a downed Cobra. The caption reads: "My
only picture of Norm 'Red' Coons, loading his weapons, after our crash in
Cambodia, 11 June 1970. The book is in memory of two people, a classmate of
the authors and "Norman R. 'Red' Coons, my platoon leader and teacher who
taught me and so many other pilots how to survive and how to protect those
who depended on us. Norm lost his life when his civilian helicopter disintegrated
in flight over south Texas in July 1980." The book was available in paperback in
bookstores as recently as last weekend. The cover page says Ivy Books of New
York but the Library of Congres data says it was published in the US by
Ballantine Books, a division of Random House. I've already emailed Norm
Coons's sister that if she can't find a copy of the book, I'll mail her mine. For
everyone else, while the book is about Apache troop, former Cavaliers will find it
a good read, as Jerry Boyle captured a lot of the details we've all forgotten. Jim

I am looking for guys who served with my brother in Vietnam from Sept. 1969
through Sept. 1970. His name was Norman R. Coons, with A Trp., 1st Sqdrn.,
9th Cav. 1st Air Cavalry Division. He was Squadron Standardization Instructor

Sadly, after serving two tours of duty in Vietnam and leaving the Army in 1972,
he was killed in a civilian helicopter crash near Houston, Texas in 1980. I am
compiling information about him for the family and would like to hear from people
who served with him during his second tour. His military history follows: Warrant
Officer Flight School, Ft. Wolters (?) July 1966-April 1967; 128th Assault
Helicopter Company May 1967-May 1968; Helicopter Instrument Flight
Instructor, Ft. Rucker, AL April 1968-June 1969; Ah-1G Transition School, Ft.

Especially the one
