What is your name? Larry E. Alexander

Where are you from? Longwood, Florida

Do you have any comments? I want to thank the men and women who served in the armed forces during the Vietnam conflict. I remember as a young boy my mother crying because her brother, Eldon Murray, had been shot down. At my age I did not fully understand what was going on, but my mother always taught me that our service men and women were fighting for my rights.

At the age of 17, I joined the United States Marine Corps and became a helicopter mechanic. I served from July 1977 to July 1981, during which time I took two tours aboard the USS Okinawa. During the second tour, the whole United States was poised to go and fight the invading USSR forces in Afghanistan. This was also the time when Iran overtook our embassy and held our people as hostages.

Again, thank you for serving our country, especially my uncle, Eldon Murray.

What is your name? john mackel

What were the dates of service with C Troop? April 69 - April 70

Where are you from? Houston

Do you have any comments? Jennie & I really enjoyed ourselves in Vegas. My big problem was making arrangements with the armored car company to get all that money I won back to Houston. But we managed. I wore my Cav hat on the plane and that Hat was the catalyst for meeting four guys and their wives from Houston. We ended up sharing a cab with a couple of them and talked all the way to the Strip. Soon as we walked into the Stardust we ran into Keith Ball and he welcomed us and gives us the rundown on where the hospitality suite was located. Of course we ran over there and had a cold one with the hard core bunch in what was now known as the offical C Troop Las Vegas TOC. What I like about these reunions after the shock of being around some so many old guys are the stories and the different perceptions of our experiences 30 odd years ago. I'm not talking about the "war stories" but everyday life stuff. For example, Bruce Huffman, at our C Troop reunion breakfast gave an excellant overview of a typical early morning and the sights and smells we encountered before and during breakfast. I appreciated that because it triggered memories in my mind of similar experiences. Bill Moeller had some great stories about what he did after he came back and what he is doing now. Vaughn Lane and I talked for hours about what was going on in 1969. Plus, I enjoyed seeing the other 69'ers, Powell, Tredway, Keel, Lane (I know I missed somebody) but I want to see more. We've got to many MAR's(Missing AT Reunion). Florida won't allow me back in the state but I'm going to BIG D in 2004. PS - Baby San, I think I won some of your money from that machine you were playing, I appreciate that it will help my youngest kid at college! Thanks

Where are you from? Harlingen, TX

Do you have any comments? Just want to say that the C Troop in Vegas was ... WONDERFUL!

This was not my first reunion, but each has seemed to be bigger, and with a different mix of folks. I started out thinking a reunion was getting back together with those I remembered (and without those I remembered and didn't want to see there

While I cannot relate to you guys that came before and after me, there is a common thread in having served in Charlie

Troop from '95 to '71.

It is the KIA families of our Brothers that now sustains my engagement. If we continue to find a place and time to meet again, it will be my focus to root out and include those family members of those we, and they, lost. I think that our recent reunions, while so special to us guys, are so MORE special to the families of those Brothers we lost.

Let's plan our future get-togethers to focus on our common brotherhood, and to honor those of our brothers' families who didn't make it back. Eh?

Walker

Only your people knew the slick nav covers (orange glass) would fit and were more durable from rocket junk. Always knew my ship coming across the patty from a nite fire mission. Was hoping they were aiming the damn rockets we took at you guys. Ya sure, they were. Watched mutiples hit the patty just beyond the berm wire while sitting on top of 060 one morning. By the time I jumped and was in the bunker two more had hit. We left to Phouc Vinh shortly after Cambodia. Looks like you guys stayed. thanks again, pakrat

Do you have any comments? I was a slick driver with c/227th 1st Cav in 1970. Our unit was accross the runway from you at Phouc Vin. Sometime around Sept there was an incident involving a 1/9th oh-6 that crashed at the refueling point on our side. the crew was trapped inside the burning wreck and the flight leader of c/227 ran from his helicopter to pull them out. he was burned very badly but managed to get all 3 out before he collapsed. I heard that the 3 men lived but we have no info on them and i would like put the all the men in touch. maj bradley has had a lot of physical problems over the years and may not be with us much longer. I dont even know if your troop was at phouc vin at that time but if you could point me in the right direction i would be very greatfull.

What were the dates of service with C Troop? I served with Charlie Troop from late 1967 to Mid. 1969.

Where are you from? I am from a small town in North Carolina called Elkin. I am right in the foot hills of the Blue Ridge Mtns.

Do you have any comments? I was crew chief on uhib/c hueys. Crewing in Dong Ha, Khe Sanh, Ashau Valley and basically most of the Northeren I core was one hell of an experience. I am retired Medically and love working on my home and garden and collecting antiques. Golfing and fishing used to be my think but my health prevents alot of that now. My last duty station in Nam was Phouch Vinh. I quit crewing for the last 3 months there and went in the field with the Blues. Big mistake. Oh well. Hind Site will allways be 20/20. Love to hear from old troopers. I plan to make the reunion at Rucker this fall. Hope some of my old buddies will be there.

Do you have any comments? Had lunch with Ken Dies couple of weeks ago. Ken was a Scout pilot and served as Cavalier White during his tour. He is currently a Federal Prosecutor with the Drug Enforcement Agency in Houston. Ironically,he has worked for sixteen years in downtown Houston across the street from where I work. I have been in downtown Houston for twenty-six years and we probably passed each other on the street many times. We had a good time and plan on getting back together so we can discuss our government paid vacation is SE Asia some more. He served in VN the same twelve month period I did. Ken and I had two main incidents together. The first was when a "50" shot him down aroung May or June 1969 and Felton and I flew cover for him while his hi-bird left to refuel and rearm. He was picked up by a slick later in the day. He was in deep do-do for a while. The second incident happened at the Bien Hoa AF Officers Club where Ken provoked an altecation betweeen us and about ten 11th ACR Tank Drivers. We successful (but barely) upheld the honor of the 1st Cav Division. More on those later. Love the comment - "glad I wasn't greased" A classic.

Do you have any comments? Greetings Gentlemen,

Firstly, let me say thank you and welcome home. I am currently writing my first book for Osprey Publishing, tentatively titled "US Army AH-1 Cobra Units of the Vietnam War". I am looking to interview air and groundcrewmen about their impressions of the Cobra, memorable missions, etc. I am also very interested to see if anyone has any photos of Snake #69-16437. It served with C Troop from August 1970 to May 1971. After being modified to S-Cobra standard, it flew for several years with the NJ National Guard and now resides at the New Jersey Aviation Hall of Fame in Teterboro, NJ.

I thank you for your time, and look forward to speaking with some of you.

Sincerely,

Jonathan Bernstein

Do you have any comments? Just a note about your request, in news and views for intel:

**"I don't know if many of you are aware that the current 1-9th CAV at Ft. Hood call themselves "Headhunters". The origin of "Headhunters" is a fit subject to pursue. My info is that it originated as the name for A Troop Lift in '65. Anybody got good intel on this? J. R. NIELSON has sent me several photos of A Trp nose art, depicting "Headhunter". My fellow C Troopers tell me that their Lift Platoon in '65 was called "Bushmasters"."**

Found this answer on the 1st of the 9th's website at:

http://pao.hood.army.mil/1cd_1-9cav/history.htm

On 15 September 1965, the 1st Squadron, 9th Cavalry began combat operations in the Republic of Vietnam as the division?s air cavalry squadron. The 1st Squadron, 9th Cavalry participated in such pivotal battles as the Ia Drang Valley, Khe Sahn, Binh Dinh, and QuangTri.? Until 28 June 1971, the 1st Squadron, 9th Cavalry remained in Vietnam.? During that period, elements from the 1st Squadron, 9th Cavalry earned fourteen campaign streamers, three Presidential Unit Citations, five Valorous Unit Citations, and the reputation as one of the finest combat units in Vietnam. ? It is estimated that the 1st Squadron, 9th Cavalry was responsible for fifty percent of all enemy soldiers killed by the 1st Cavalry Division during the war.? It was for this reason that the battalion earned its current nickname ?The Headhunters.?? The 1st Squadron, 9th Cavalry troopers earned two Medals of Honor in Vietnam.? The Fort Hood Guest House, Poxon House, was named in honor of one of the squadron?s Medal of Honor recipients, First Lieutenant Robert L. Poxon, who earned his Medal of Honor on 2 June 1969, in the Tay Ninh Province.? (end quote)

Also am looking for the "official" round C Troop Scouts patch with the crossed sabres. Anyone have a line on 2 of these patches please email me.

Nice site, and great work keeping it up. Thank you for all your efforts.

Do

Do you have any comments? 1st Cav RVN 10/68-10/69. 3rd Bde PIO at Quan Loi until March then XO/FDO A/1-21 FA the rest of my tour. In early July 1969 I was on my way back to my battery from R&R and got as far as Phuoc Vinh. Waiting for a ride on the 1-9 Cav afternoon "courier" in one of the clubs, I looked up when a pilot walked in. We stared at each other in disbelief - it was Ernie Burns! We grew up in Bronxville, NY, and were in Cub Scouts together. I think his older brother was John and we were also Boy Scouts. Ernie told me his brother flew jets and they had visited each other in-country. I wrote my parents to tell them I'd seen Ernie and that he would be home in a few weeks and promised to drop in and see them - we only lived about 4 blocks apart. When my parents responded to that letter, they told me that Ernie had been killed and sent a clipping from the local paper. From what I've been able to piece together, mostly from talking with some of the Rangers who were involved in the incident, there was a midair collision 14 July between two helicopters supporting a Ranger team thought to be in contact. When I got home in October, one of the first things I did was to go and see his parents. If anyone from C Troop knew Ernie or has more information about that crash, I'd appreciate hearing from you. God Bless Ernie and all the good men we lost.

Do you have any comments? Welcome to the new guest book one and all. Due to changes with the old server this was necessary. Besides it let me make a whole new page for the site.

All old guest book entries from Walker's old site as well as this one have been archived. Forgive the tattered look as they didn't cut and paste well. I will clean them up as time permits.
