I would like to post and dedicate this to all who have helped others in need. Especially to Gary B Hayes "Thirsty 37" (all who knew him know why) and all of the other soldiers who were their for us when we needed. Kim Abbott - Gary's daughter.
THE FINAL INSPECTION
>The soldier stood and faced God,
>Which must always come to pass.
>He hoped his shoes were shining,
>Just as brightly as his brass.
>"Step forward now, you soldier,
>How shall I deal with you?
>Have you always turned the other cheek?
>To My Church have you been true?"
>The soldier squared his shoulders and said,
>"No, Lord, I guess I ain't.
>Because those of us who carry guns,
>Can't always be a saint.
>I've had to work most Sundays,
>And at times my talk was tough.
>And sometimes I've been violent,
>Because the world is awfully rough.
>But, I never took a penny
>That wasn't mine to keep...
>Though I worked a lot of overtime,
>When the bills got just too steep.
>And I never passed a cry for help,
>Though at times I shook with fear.
>And sometimes, God, forgive me,
>I've wept unmanly tears.
>I know I don't deserve a place,
>Among the people here.
>They never wanted me around,
>Except to calm their fears.
>If you've a place for me here, Lord,
>It needn't be so grand.
>I never expected or had too much,
>And if you don't, I'll understand.
>There was a silence all around the throne,
>Where the saints had often trod.
>As the soldier waited quietly,
>For the judgment of his God.
>"Step forward now, you soldier,
>You've borne your burdens well.
>Walk peacefully on Heaven's streets,
>You've done your time in Hell."

I jumped in to see if John Powell; or Randy Zahn, Brian Holcomb, etc. had put out the info...(it seems they are way toooo modest to do so,) so not seeing it:
John Powell, Cavalier 25, lessor known as "my Dad" will be featured in a back to Nam program on Veteran's Day, November 11, 2005 on the History Channel's "Mail Call" program.

Randy Zahn, Brian Holcomb, etc., will be in a Discovery Military program, also about their experiences and returning to Nam, planned for the initial showing in December. If they do not put the dates up, I will hope to do so for everyone.

I have supplied my personal Super 8mm movie film collection from Nam for the History Channel Program, and am in the process of getting this film from the History Channel over to the Discovery Military Channel producers.... how do we all say, "Flashbacks?"

Cheers all... Grover

I'm looking for information on my brother Maj. Thomas M. Felton: Served two tours of duty. 1) June 1966/1967, wounded; 2) February 1969, Killed in action on 14 July 1969, while serving as Commander of C Troop, 1/9. Would be interesting in corresponding with anyone who served with him, either as his commanding officer(s) or who served with him. Also need someone to explain the meaning of the "Oak Leaf Clusters." Based on information provided to newspaper at the time of his death, he had received 40 "OLC."

I want to wish not only my fellow troopers but all Vietnam Veterans a great Father's Day.
I know a lot of us may have sons and daugthers fighting yet another war as we did in areas of the world. I pray for their safety and quick return.
I want to take this opportunity to thank Grover Wright for the video of C troop 1/9 during the 1969-1970 period. I also would ask fellow troppers to visit the website above and contact me if you recognize any of the troopers and have any info on their current locations or names of the troopers.
Again a Great Father's Day to all.

I want to call your attention to the Texas Tech Vietnam Center. www.vietnam.ttu.edu The Vietnam Center of Texas Tech University is mainly a Research & Archive project started by James Reckner, a navy veteran with two tours on river boats. I met him in Feburary when I was at TTU visiting my son. Check out the web site and go to publications and read the latest newsletter. Jim has a great article on his perspective of the "Greatest Generation". I believe the man made a tremenous contribution to American History by creating the VN Center. They are also hosting a 2 day symposium on 12-13 Nov 05 to mark the 40th anniversity of Ia Drang Valley campaign. Do yourself a favor and vist the web site. I'm a friend of the Viet Nam Center and I believe you should be also. Thanks

I admired him and took a lot of advice from that old guy. He called me the day I left for flight school and gave me a good old fashioned CW5 talking to. The photo albums brought back some long forgotten memories. Gordon Jones Photos included picturs of Fred Williams who I think was in S2 or personnel. And I remembered Swartz but I can remember his first name. It might have been Fred. SSgt Purgey was my boss. He ran the headquarters bunker and Flight Ops. I worked for him until I he rotated home. I could not believe Frank Hisers photo of the company road as my tent was right there on the cornor. I will never forget the night a round or gernade went off in the ditch next to the tent. The sharpnel went across the road and hit the little Sqdn office and blew holes in the squadron sign. If the force of the blast had gone into our tent I probably would have been killed with less then a month in country. You folks have done an excellent job with this site. Thank you for your hard work.

In late October 1970 I was transferred by Army Special Services from Phu Bai to Phuoc Vinh to finally be with the First Cav. I had requested this assignment since coming "in-country" in March. My first night in Phuoc Vinh was spent with the 1/9 at their club. It was here that I met these brave men in Stetsons. During my seven months with the Cav we would often have 1/9 enlisted men visit the service club. At Christmas a great picture was taken of me with a door gunner of 1/9. (I'll try to find it and send it on to you) Kevin Perrier forwarded to me your website after asking me to identify a picture of a Red Cross girl stationed in Phuoc Vinh at the same time I was. My club director, Tina Dexter, and I would be the last females to leave Phuoc Vinh the next March when the Cav was officially (as a division) returned to Texas. My thoughts are often with the men of the Cav. When I visit The Wall I always say a special prayer for them.
