Great reading all the comments about the 1/9. I was a LOH crewchief with the

25th Inf at Cu Chi and Tay Ninh. God, I can still live those "first light" missions,

flying on the deck and the warm sweet smells of burning campfires. Flew alot

around Straight Edge Woods and Michellin Rubber Plantation. Also Hobo

Woods. I'm 52 and have three grandchildren. I can tell them stories but

somehow, you just can't seem to express all. HAd a good friend named Stan

Pedrick who crewed a LOH with 1/9. Knew him at Ft. Eustis when he returned

in 1969. Anyone know him??? Blaster 87

I was a Little Bird Pilot with C company 1st of the 9th Cav at Phouc Vinh from

about Aug 1969 to Jan 1970 I was a Huey driver with 227th for about 5 months

before that. When I got there there was only 2 LOH6 pilots left and no Birds to

fly... The Maint Pilot Lt Smith trained me and we brought all the new Little Birds

up from Hotel 3.... at the time, I was the first CW2 to hold a command position

as White Platoon Leader as there was no RLO's to do the job. We finally got a

replacement RLO and I got to go on R&R, when I got back He had been killed

already.... bad times. I just ran accross your site, and found Grover's site (he

was my Snake pilot)boy it was great talking with him, he was on line when I

E-mailed and came right back at me..... Thanks again for being here.

Hurricanes (CH54s) loved the spirit allways displayed by the Cav. Love you

I was a helicopter pilot with the First Cav from Aug. 67 to March. 69 the first

year was with B- 229th. I then extended and joined D-229th. then C Troop 1/9 as

scout for the last four months as Cavalier 16. I beleive that Service in the armed

forces was the correct and honorable thingto do reguardless of the outcome.

JOHN NIAMTU

Served from 6/64 to 5/66.We were C/3/17 Cav at FT Benning, Ga when i joined

the outfit. The 1st thing I had to do was get checked out in the OH-13S.After I

crashed and destroyed one during the Air Assault II exercises in the Carolinas

they grounded me for a month. While grounded, and with time on my hands Don

Radcliff ( Maj Radcliff was our Troop commander who became the first person

Killed in Vietam from the 1st Cav Div) sent me out to "borrow a mule to

participate in a Birthday bash that he had planned for Bull Whip 6 , LTC John

Stockton. We dressed the Mule up with two M-60s hanging on his sides and a

rotating beacon attached to a sand bag sittin on his rump. On Bull Whip 6's

birthday morning we all gathered at o dark thirty in front of his tent, had the

bugler play reveille then sang Happy Birthday to a Stunned Sqd Commander.

Well he loved the dammed mule and ordered it to be taken back to Ft Benning

to become the Sqd Mascot. But the guy who owned it wouldn't sell. So CWO

Dave Gailling our Supply Officer found and baught another Mule who Became

Maggie The Mule, who we took to Vietnam, and who subsequently was shot

and killed one dark moonless night while munching grass near the perimeter at

An Ky by by a Ist CavTrooper.I do not think LTC Stockton was ever aware that

Maggie was not the same Mule that participated in his Birthday ceremony. I

went to Vietnam With C Troop after we became 1/9 Cav. We went on the USS

Boxer from Jacksonville across the Atlantic thru the Med, the Suez,Red Sea

Indian Ocean and finally the south China Sea to Quin Nion. I then had the

privilege to fly my H-13 off the Boxer to the base camp. That was my last flight

in an H-13s.I was then transfered to Chuck Knowland's Blue platoon and flew in

support of the best Infantry in the world untill I transfered to a new unit in the

south in June 66. Thanks for for having this page. My apologies for being

verbose, I didn't have time to write a short note. Thirsty-37
